Moving Forward

The creative writing class at Elkhorn High School taught by Kim Zach completed a unit in poems. Chiana Knaack wrote a poem called a pantoum. Its repeating pattern of lines creates a unique echo effect.

I make this choice just for me.

I could have gone the other way.

I take one, two, three steps.

Left. Right. Forward. Backward.

I could have gone the other way.

They claim I have a choice-

Left, Right, Forward, Backward.

But I still hear your voice.

They claim I have a choice.

It doesn’t matter where I go-

I still hear your voice,

calling out to keep me. Still

It doesn’t matter where I go

without care. For love and fear

call out to keep me still.

I keep moving on.

Without care for love and fear,

I take one, two, three steps.

I keep moving on,

I made this choice, just for me.
