Elkhorn students are slipping into some new shoes at unified bowling league team, a fourteen-member group which specializes in athletic activity for some of Elkhorn’s special education students, partnered with other bowling-enthusiastic students from across the school. The school team did very well at district competition this autumn – “We did good, but have a tough district… we got EMC runner up, which is awesome,” said Lindsay Struble, a teacher and coach who is also involved with golf, Circle of Friends, and middle school track. Shawn Kortan, a senior at EHS in Struble’s special education life skills class, has been involved for a few years, and enjoys the time spent bowling, along with watching basketball in his free time.
Organizing the competitive events is a collaboration between coaches and players, involving seeking out peer mentors, setting up the meets, putting the teams together and adapting them to changes, communicating with other teams, and, above all else, going out for meets and bowling their very best – all at the drop of a pin. “…we had a great season, and fun,” said Struble, who hopes to add more competitions in the future, “and are hoping to keep building it bigger!”
