Into the Unknown of Frozen 2

Since Frozen hit the theatres in 2013, almost six years ago, the topic of a sequel has been in the air. Since it first was announced, many wondered if a sequel would hold a candle to the first Frozen, and low and behold, it did. Along with new songs and characters, Frozen 2 brings a whole new meaning of sisterhood and empowerment to young viewers. Most of Disney’s sequels are questionable, so surely this movie had some critics skeptical. Viewers were given a nice surprise as critics gave it a 76% on rotten tomatoes. Personally, I like the storyline of Frozen 2 better than the first, because in the first it was too predictable. In the sequel, I think there were more plot twists and unpredictable turns throughout the film.
Similar to the first movie, the main characters, Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven and Olaf return, but as in any sequel, more characters are introduced. These new characters contribute elements of the past, present, and future into the storyline. Each main character embarks on a spiritual journey that shows growth and maturity. Elsa goes from letting it go, to showing her true self. In addition, Anna embraces change and turns her negative emotions into empowerment throughout the song, The Next Right Thing.
When it comes to Disney movies, it is expected that the music is cheerful and cheesy, but this movie takes it to a more mature level. It contributes music that shows a deeper meaning. Thankfully, humor is not left out in this Disney sequel, as Olaf appeals to an older audience. Cracking jokes and using sarcasm as a way of expressing himself. This new version of Olaf is refreshing to the young and older audiences.
Surely I had my doubts going into the theatre, but they were resolved the more I watched. My 10 year old self might have loved Frozen but my 16 year old self appreciates Frozen 2 more. The elements of empowerment and acceptance in this movie reaches a whole new level. While it is unknown if Frozen will become a trilogy, one cannot be sure the next film would top the last two. For now, Arendelle is in safe hands.
