Fall Sports Recap

  This past summer there was uncertainty if there would be a fall sports season. After not having a spring sports season last school year, the announcement that there would be a fall sports season was exciting to athletes, coaches, and fans. Playing amidst a pandemic brought new guidelines such as masks, social distancing, and limited crowds. Despite those, the antlers made the most of their season.

     Both the boys and girls cross country teams had successful seasons. At districts, the boys team placed third. Individually, Luke Coltvet placed 5th, Ethan Walters 9th, and Carlos Malfait 10th. The girls team became district champs. Maddie Yardley took 2nd, Taylor Grasz 4th, Sara Espinoza 6th, Sofia Hartman 7th, Abby Metschke 8th, and Danika Ratnapradipa 10th. After running a strong regular season, both teams qualified for the Class B State Tournament. The girls team brought home some hardware as they took runner-up with Maddie Yardley placing 6th and Abby Metschke placing 15th.

     Boys tennis had a strong season as well. Varsity finished fifth out of six teams at the York Invite. Senior Will Ford finished third at #2 singles for the day. Ford went on to be the antlers lone winner at #2 singles after the first round of the Class B State Tournament.

     The softball team finished their season strong with a record of 22-14. The lady antlers won the EHS tournament. In game one they beat Blair 4-0. They went on to beat Malcolm 12-0 in game two and beat Duchesne 15-3 in game three. The lady antlers beat Blair twice (7-2 and 10-2) to claim the B-5 District Title. At state the team went 1-2. They beat Seward 5-0 and were later knocked out by Hastings.

     The girls’ golf team fought through a challenging season. The team secured a victory in their dual against Waverly. Alexa Swerczek had the low score of 41. Katie Schultz had a score of 43, Grace Ferguson 45, Maddy Fry 57, and Emily Theisen 59. Another notable moment from the season is the team was the EMC tournament runner-up. Individually Schultz placed 6th, Ferguson 8th, and Swerczek 10th.

     The volleyball team had a noteworthy season. They punched their ticket to state by beating Lexington in three sets (25-13, 25-15, 25-17) in the B-4 District Final. The lady antlers swept York in the first round of the Class B State Tournament 28-26, 25-16, and 25-10. In the semifinals of the state tournament, their season came to an end with a loss to Norris. They finished their season with an overall record of 23-10.

     The football team had a stellar season as well. The antlers beat Skutt 24-21 and used a huge goal-line stand to hold them off. The antlers dominated Gross in the opening round of playoffs with a 53-7 win. After this victory, the antlers went on to secure a 41-16 victory against Waverly in the Class B Quarterfinals. The following week the antlers took down Hastings 33-28 in the state semifinals to secure a spot in the Class B State Championship. The antlers took the crown with a 42-19 win over Aurora claiming the Class B State Title, finishing their season with an overall record of 11-2. 

     Although the 2020 fall sports season did not look like past seasons, it was still a competitive and memorable season for the antlers.
