[1]A club with backlash over picking up litter during Earth Day and talking about how to make the world a better place. Be The Change is a group that was started in late March of 2021, and it started with a goal: to create an all-inclusive club that works to serve the community and educate people while giving everyone a safe place to share their opinions.
Be The Change was started by two sophomores and a freshman: Danah Alounk, Jocey Louge, and Chris Wickham. They hold meetings every Wednesday after school in Mrs. Waldo’s room. These meetings tend to revolve around a single topic. For example, the month of April has been about Autism awareness, and one meeting was about Earth Day.
There have been multiple incidents this group has faced, like being attacked on social media. When asked about these instances, the leaders just brush off the attacks knowing that nothing will happen. They are just hoping to inform people of issues while allowing everyone a space to share their opinions.
“We just want to create a space where people can share their opinions without fear of being judged,” Alounk said.
The goal of this club is to become a large group of people that can freely share their opinions while working together to improve the community. This doesn’t mean they don’t have fun, as they plan to hold events like watching movies, playing games, and other community-driven activities.
“We wish that everyone joins and helps make the community a better place,” Alounk said.
