Following a competitive scrimmage against an Elkhorn South team that was ranked in the top 2 nationally for a majority of last season, Elkhorn seemed to struggle against their new rival Elkhorn North in The Den for their first regular season game. Losing in three sets 25-12, 25-17, 27-25.

First year head coach Morgan Johnson gave her experience coaching her first regular season game. “I had a lot of fun at yesterday’s game,” Coach Johnson recalled, “We have such a great group of girls from all levels, and they really make this whole experience special with their attitudes and efforts, so I was excited to them get the opportunity to play their first match of the season.” Coach Johnson also gave credit for the student section and the whole crowd for creating an energy filled atmosphere.

The game wasn’t all bad news however as Coach Johnson remarked, “Our girls never gave up and stuck together as a team. These girls are competitors and it showed last night.” Both Coach Johnson and junior middle Haley Wolfe agreed that their defense on the net with blocking improved as the match went on and overall was a strong suit on Thursday.

As for skills to work on, senior outside hitter Taylor Bunjer reflected on the game saying, “Coach told us in the next few practices we will be drilling serve receive and passing a lot more to get our hitters in system.” Coach Johnson backed this statement commenting how it was important to get a good first pass off the opponents serve to get in system as an offense.

“It was really fun getting to play against old teammates and it increased my drive to win”, Wolfe mentioned. Bunjer agreed stating, “It was fun because we got to play against people we used to play with but that also made it more competitive because it was a rival”

The team looks forward to a rematch at home in the triangular on Tuesday between Wahoo Bishop-Neumann, Elkhorn and Elkhorn North. Playing Wahoo at 5:00 and Elkhorn North at 7:00
