On September 10, the Elkhorn Antlers (No. 2) visited the Waverly Vikings (No. 4). The game was the inauguration of the Viking’s new turf field. The Antlers had a strong start with a 5 play drive ending with a 6-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the first quarter. The game then slowed down substantially with both team’s defenses ramping up. Elkhorn punted 6 of the next 7 times they were in possession of the ball, with the only exception being due to the end of the first half.
Waverly then scored three times, the first was a touchdown with a four-yard run by Eddie Johnson, and a PAT kick by Devin Moore. The next two scores were 41 yard and 36-yard field goals both by Johnson, at the end of the second quarter, and the beginning of the fourth quarter, respectively.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, a 90-yard lightning-bolt run by Hank Kroger finally broke through the Viking’s impenatrable defense stunned the crowd with the final score of the game. The PAT kick attempt stopped short because of an offsides call on the Vikings, leading Antlers coach Dan Feickert to decide to go for a two-point conversion. The attempt would be converted off a Connor Hunt sneak into the endzone, giving the Antlers the one point edge.
Waverly would make a momentous drive down the field that came to a field goal attempt and Eddie Johnson would have to feat from nearly 35 yards. It was unsuccessful as it came up short and ended the game with a final score of 14 Antlers, 13 Vikings.
The game leaves the Elkhorn Antlers 3-0 with wins against Norris, Roncalli, and Waverly. Waverly is now 1-2 with losses to both Skutt (No. 1) and number Elkhorn (No.2).
The Antlers will host their homecoming game against Blair this Thursday, September 16, and Waverly will host Grand Island Friday, September 17.
