On September 18th, 2021, Elkhorn High School hosted its first-ever outdoor homecoming. People had mixed feelings about having homecoming outside. Personally, I was thrilled about hosting the school homecoming outside.
Hosting homecoming outside was a good choice. My freshman year, homecoming was held in the auxiliary gym. The whole time it was hot, humid, and overall, not fun. This year, I felt like everyone had more space to move around and dance. Holding homecoming outdoors helped everyone feel less crowded and free to move around.
Throughout my time at the dance, I heard many people complaining about the song choices. People said that the song choices weren’t “dancing songs,” and I agree. While there were a few songs, like “Cupid Shuffle” and “YMCA,” that got people to dance, the rest of the playlist were songs that people would not typically dance to. Overall, there were some decent songs, but there were also a lot of songs that were bad or that I didn’t recognize.
On the field, there was a border made out of string lights that were supposed to mark the area designated as the dance floor. About an hour into the dance, everyone broke through the lights and migrated to the other side of the field where the music was the loudest. The border of lights was a good idea in theory, but as soon as I saw it, I knew that people wouldn’t stay inside the designated area. The lights looked good as a decoration, but if they wanted people to stay in that area, they should’ve moved it closer to where the music was coming from.
At around 10:30 at night, the coronation of homecoming king and queen took place. Overall, the coronation was somewhat unamusing. I don’t think the announcers emphasized it enough because no one seemed excited about it. They held the coronation ceremony on the field under the field goal, but it would’ve been better if they had the homecoming court stand on the bleachers so that everyone could see them better.
