Spider-Man movies have played a large role in people’s childhoods for generations, starting with Tobey Maguire’s trilogy in the early 2000s and moving to Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man film series. Now, Tom Holland plays the role of Spider-Man in the movies Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and most recently, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The new Spider-Man movie is making fans go crazy, and I can’t blame them.
I saw the new Spider-Man movie on December 18, 2021, and to say it was amazing would be an understatement.
The story takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in New York City, and it features characters including Doctor Strange, Electro, Green Goblin, Doctor Otto Octavius, and Sandman. The main characters are Spider-Man, his girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. The story also features Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, who plays a very important role in this movie. The story began with the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, revealed that Spider-Man’s hidden identity was Peter Parker. This caused the world to turn on Spider-Man and lead to Peter Parker turning to Doctor Strange for help. He asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell that would make everyone forget who Peter Parker was, but throughout the spell, Parker asked Strange to change it five different times, leading to the spell getting out of control. Because of this, villains throughout the multiverse, who were revealed to be classic villains from the previous Spider-Man franchises, were pulled into this universe. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker now had to find a way to safely send these characters back to where they’re from.
Tom Holland, the actor playing Spider-Man and Peter Parker, did a fantastic job in this film, just as he did in the others. Holland captured the essence of Peter Parker, a nerdy, socially awkward teenager, perfectly. At the end of the movie, during his fight with the Green Goblin, Holland did a great job of conveying all of the emotions that were built up throughout the entire movie. With his facial expressions to the tone of his voice, he perfectly encaptured the pain and sadness that Peter Parker endured. Jacob Batalon also did a great job playing the role of Ned, Peter Parker’s best friend and right-hand man. Like Parker, Ned is a nerdy teenager, and he prides himself on the fact that he is Spider-Man’s best friend and “guy in the chair.” Zendaya, playing the role of MJ, and Benedict Cumberbatch, playing the role of Doctor Strange, also did an outstanding job in this film.
I liked the constant surprises that this movie gave the audience. From the sudden death of Peter Parker’s beloved Aunt May to the surprise appearance of the previous Spider-Mans Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, this movie didn’t fail to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. My experience during this movie was anything but boring. In the scene where Mj and Ned were sitting around the table at Ned’s house, Ned waved his hands around while he was talking about Peter Parker. Sparks flew around them as a portal opened to Peter Parker, but not their friend. Ned’s grandmother screamed, and we were met with the previous Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield. This scene caused pure excitement and happiness for everyone in the theater, including myself, who had nostalgic memories of The Amazing Spider-Man movies. There has never been another movie that caused the amount of complete and utter happiness that this scene did.
An important theme to take away from this movie is to cherish the time you have with your loved ones while you still have it. At the end of the movie, Peter lost everyone that he loved and everyone who loved him because Doctor Strange’s spell caused everyone to forget him. In one of the last scenes in the movie, Peter went to the coffee shop where MJ worked and saw her and Ned hanging out. He intended to reveal his identity to them, in hopes of reviving their relationship, but he saw how they were better off without him. He ended up leaving the shop without revealing his identity.
This movie is rated PG-13. I would recommend this movie to everyone above the age of 10 because it is a really great movie, but some of the concepts may be hard for younger people to comprehend. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to people who are super sensitive because this movie is an emotional rollercoaster. Overall, this film is amazing! If you haven’t seen it, go watch it! And if you have seen it, go see it again! It’s worth it.
Final Rating out of 10:
9.8/10
-0.2 for the emotional toll this movie took on me
