And your 2022, Class B state champions are… Elkhorn High School!
Five hours of practice each week since June of 2021 paid off for the EHS cheer team. The team made history in becoming Elkhorn High’s first cheer state champions. Although the team competed very well this season, they still never thought it was possible.
It wasn’t just luck; the team worked very hard all year to obtain their goal. Practices consisted of running their routines full out and breaking them into sections to fix little mistakes and differences. The team competed in one other competition at Midland University this past year and became grand champions. Another time the team prepared for state was the Millard West Showcase. With great performances throughout the year, it foreshadowed their big win at state.
As the team prepared to go, they emphasized how it was their last performance, what the team meant to them, and how everyone gave their best efforts. Spiriting off the floor, the EHS cheer team agreed it was the best performance they had.
“This was our best performance yet,” senior and captain Elsie Uleman said. “It was surreal because it was our last performance ever.”
Due to COVID, the competing teams had to sit scattered across the arena. Once every team settled in, Class B rankings were announced. The announcer started with fourth place, and ended with Elkhorn High School.
“Winning state felt very accomplishing and rewarding,” sophomore Noah Niles said. “It felt good to let our seniors leave the team with a state title and felt good to know our hard work paid off.”
