Elkhorn fell to Gross Catholic High School 21-14 on September 8th. The game consisted of over 400 rushing yards between the 2 teams creating a battle in the trenches. Gross’ featured back, Jake Garcia, was the bright spot for the cougar offense creating a problem for the Antler defense rushing for 140 yards on 15 carries.
The Antlers punched first with a KJ Schenck rushing touchdown from the 2 yard line creating a 7-0 lead. The Cougars would answer back in the 2nd quarter with their own rushing touchdown from Jake Garcia from 1 yard out evening the score 7-7.
The Antlers would start the half with a sack of Gross quarterback Colby Duncan leading to a three and out. The Antlers would stay hot and punch in another KJ Schenck touchdown from the 2, making the score 14-7 following the PAT from Cole Houck.
TE Tanner Houck would prove to be a threat in the air with his large 6’3 frame taking in 58 yards on 4 catches which would lead the team in receptions. Despite this, the Connor Hunt lead offense would stall for the rest of the game and the defense would need to step up.
The Gross rushing attack was too much for the Antler defense and the Cougars would punch in a 2 yard Tommy Gilbert rushing touchdown tying the game at 14-14. The Antler offense would continue to fall short in the 4th quarter as they were forced to punt twice.
In crunch time the Cougars would pound the rock and find the endzone with the third different running back in Owen Brennan off a 37 yard breakaway run. With the PAT coming from Kosse the game’s final score would be set in stone 21-14.
The Antler offense would stall for the last time and the Cougars would run away with the 1 score game improving to a record of 3-0 ahead of their matchup with the Blair bears. The Antlers hope to bounce back at home against Skutt on the 16th.
