Luke Howard has already gained a menacing reputation on the court as a leader and top scorer for the fourth ranked Antlers. He scored 18 points in the first game of the season against Mount Michael, and plans to build on that performance with a strong senior season.
“My approach is to give 110 percent,” Howard said. “I contribute to the team by scoring and assists, and making sure my teammates are open.”
Going into his fourth and last season playing for the Antlers, Howard has been putting work in during the off season.
“We had summer camps and summer leagues where we played against other schools,” Howard said. “In the fall we had 6:00 am practices and then fall league where we played Class A schools.”
During this practice, Howard has gotten the unique experience of playing on the same team as his younger brother, incoming freshman Peter Howard. The brothers describe the experience of having a sibling become a teammate.
“It’s like a dream come true honestly,” Peter Howard said. ”As a little kid I always played with him, and being on a high school varsity court playing with him is just something I always dreamed of.”
This senior reflects on the benefits that come with playing next to his little brother.
“He plays the same position as me so we are always guarding each other in practice,” Luke Howard said. “I think he pushes me to do better.”
Another reason for Howard to push this season is because this point guard aspires to continue his basketball career after high school.
“I have been interested in playing at York College, Central Community College, and McPherson College,” Howard said.
With their already-successful record of 2-0 against Mount Michael and Waverly, the Antlers hope to continue their winning streak, with the next game taking place on December 8th at Elkhorn High at 7:30 pm. Although they had many wins in the 2022-2023 season, Howard explains there is still much room for growth.
“Last year we got to state but we didn’t make it far, so we’re gonna try to win it this year,” Howard said. “We also want to go undefeated, and make a statement for everyone.”
