Buzzer Beaten

Colin Comstock’s buzzer beater highlights a Top 10 rivalry

Nothing but net.

Senior Colin Comstock, the leading scorer for the Elkhorn High men’s basketball team, swished a jaw-dropping game-winner to beat Bennington at the buzzer, 54-51. The shot was electric, taking fans out of their seats and onto the court to celebrate with the team.

“I was just happy that we won the game,” Comstock said. “It was pretty cool to have it end in that way.”

The play would not have been possible without the clutch steal by senior forward Nate Roberts who stole the ball to give Elkhorn the opportunity for the shot that they needed.

“The play that Nate made was huge, and he is the reason that I had the opportunity to hit the shot,” Comstock said.

In situations where the game is on the line, Comstock said it is essential to remain calm, to block out any outside noise and to focus on the play that could decide the game.

“When we called a timeout, I just took some deep breaths and tried to be as confident as I could be to hit the shot,” Comstock said.

Although Comstock’s shot was the play everyone will remember, the Antlers had to fight back from being down by nearly double digits in the 3rd quarter. Senior center Cole Petersen led the charge with an impressive game in which he put up two jaw-dropping dunks and multiple vicious blocks.

“We understood that we only had to fix a few small things, get up and pressure and they couldn’t handle it,” Petersen said. “That let us back into the game.”

The Antlers return to the court Jan. 27 against Lincoln Northwest. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
