Basketball can be intense, even at a recreational level, and may not be for everyone, but intramural basketball can be for anyone. Students, mostly sophomores through seniors, play each other at school.

EHS has worked to make intramural basketball special for all the athletes by helping them create friendships, competitiveness, and love for the sport. 

There are five tournaments for the intramural basketball players to show their skills. They also play 2-3 games each tournament.  

“We play once a week, we usually have two or three games,” senior Abby Roberts said. 

“We have 5 tournaments,” junior Sam Beller said. 

Basketball players always have the coolest or worst jerseys, some of which our intramural basketball players have some different uniforms than others. 

“We wear a plain white shirt in black shorts because we don’t want to be too fancy. We also have Willie Rush on our shirts,” junior Gavin Goldal said. 

“We try to wear the same color at least but nothing too special. We might come out of our shell and do something fun, the last game we had we wore all blue clothing,” senior Karlie Janousek said. 

It might be someone’s first or last time playing intramural basketball. That’s why usually the teams are heavy on the senior class because it’s their last time playing intramural at Elkhorn High. 

“I chose to play because it’s my senior year, I felt like it’ll be fun. I just remember when I was a junior and sophomore the seniors who did it looked like they were having fun. I am trying to do the best I can, especially for my last year in high school, just so I can remember all the good memories and not just sitting at home,” Janousek said. 

The back to back champions of intramural have put up a good fight with other teams through the season and made a great comeback. 

“We went back to back but the semi finals tournament we were down by seven at halftime,” senior Gil Schroeder said. “We came back from that and then in the finals we were down by one at halftime. There were 30 seconds left and Ryan Ellison hit a buzzer beater.” 

Ellison, a senior, made the last shot of the game to be named the victors of intramural basketball at Elkhorn High 2024. 

“We were down one with five seconds left and I came off the screen and shot the winning points,” Ellison said. “The feeling was electric because that means we are back to back champions.”
