The Elkhorn High boys golf team has wrapped up the regular season with a motivation to get to state. The boys golf team finished first in two invites this season, the Ralston Invite at Miracle Hills Golf Course and the Skutt Invite at Tiburon Golf Course. With the recent win at the Skutt Invite, it gives them much added inspiration to get an invite to the state tournament held in Scottsbluff.
“We have played in almost all of our outings which has allowed us to compete and develop and we are making our big rush for the brightest opportunity and that is our district tournament to get a chance to play at state,” Coach Travis Thompson said.
The ability to be able to play in these spring months has allowed the players to get better and develop their skills as golfers. One player in particular is on set to break a record as well.
“I am really close to the school record for lowest 9 hole season average currently,” senior Tommy Strohman said,”I am at a 38.3 average score on 9 holes which if I keep it up it will set the record.”
It would be incredible to have a record broken in golf because in recent years no one has and the past records of the team have not been up to par. However, this year has been special and very promising. This is because the group of varsity players are able to post good numbers and rely on each other.
“In order to do good as a team you have to rely on each other and everybody has to play good and do their own part,” junior Jayce Weasel said.
This is what makes golf special because in high school golf is not an individual contest. One has to hope the teammates did as well as them if they want to win. Regardless, if someone does well, it is possible to still place in the top for the invites and win medals. However, the aspect of that makes golf a team sport is what makes it challenging.
“Though the team score is counted, it feels much more individual as you focus heavily on personal performance throughout the round, but you have to have trust in the teammates to post good scores and be there to back you up in the event that you do not have a good round,” senior Tanner McColly said.
Golf is a special sport for high school as you have to play well on your own and rely on your teammates to do well too. So with the regular season ending and finishing it off with a win at the Skutt Invite at Tiburon, it will give the team some motivation heading into districts and hopefully catch a win.
“Seeing potential was one goal and once we found it, how good can we get as a team,” Thompson said.
