Name stands as it is, “Days Before Rodeo” is certainly before “Rodeo.” Not only is this album not as good as Travis Scott’s magnum opus, “Rodeo,” it is not even close. The album only has a few good features, such as Young Thug, Big Sean, and Migos. The only problem is they do not really add to the musical experience. In my opinion, the addition of the features only makes the album seem a little sloppy. However, I have to say, this is Travis Scott’s second studio released album, and for a second album it is pretty good.
The first song that starts off the album is “Days Before Rodeo: The Prayer”. This interlude provides a decent transition into the feel of the album. It automatically gets you ready for a ride through ups and downs in the album. I would say for an interlude of an album the song scores pretty high, I would give it a solid 5/10. For an interlude, this is pretty high.
The second song of the album is “Mamacita,” which features Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug. With the provided interlude, the transition is pretty good and the intro to the song is unexpected. The features play a very good role in this song especially Rich Homie Quan who provides a new sound that fits well with the vibe of the song, however, the opposite is true for Young Thug. I personally have never been a big fan of Young Thug which does not help the rating of the song. Overall, this is the big hitter song of the album and it delivers with an intriguing sound. My rating for this song is 7.5/10.
Next is “Quintana Pt. 2,” the intro to the song is spectacular as Travis Scott goes back to his trap routes, which is something I personally like. This song has a nice mellow vibe to it. It would be a great song to just chill and do homework and crank things out. In conclusion, this song provides a mellow, chill vibe and is something I like in music and specifically rap music. I will give this song a solid 7/10 because at the same time I feel the vocals could be a little bit better.
Following is “Drugs You Should Try It.” Disclaimer, do not do drugs. Before the album was released, this song in particular had been hyped up so much and was expected to be great. However, I do not agree. The vocals could be so much better and is something I do not understand because it is a muffled sound. The beat and vibe it gives off is good, but it does not deserve the hype as Travis Scott’s vocals are just muffled. I give this song a rating of 6.5/10, it could be so much better.
The fifth song of the album is “Don’t Play” featuring The 1975 and Big Sean. This song starts off like it is gonna be a banger, and it believers. The features of this song are fantastic. The 1975 provides a new sound that I like and Big Sean is a good addition to give new vocals and a clear sound. However, my inner critic can not help but think that the lyrics are too repetitive. That being said, I give this song a 6.5/10 just because it needs more variety.
“Skyfall” featuring yet again Young Thug is next. Although my opinions on Young Thug are mainly negative, he actually fits well with this song. The vocals and sound of the song are very good and deserve more attention. The vibe fits great with how I like rap and will score pretty high. When you listen to this album this is a must listen as it is a great mellow song that has great flow and lyrics. This song deserves a 8/10 for great reason.
Next is “Zombies,” which is honestly not that great. I feel as if this song was more of a test for Travis Scott to see how his listeners would react and respond to it. The lyrics are good and flow is great, however the beat just does not work. For the lyrics it has the beat needs to be less explosive and more trap like. So, this song gets a 5.5/10 because there is a lot of potential.
The next song is “Sloppy Toppy” which features Migos and Peewee Longway. I have never heard of Peewee Longway, however I think this guy carries the song along with Travis Scott’s verses. At the same time, the Migos feature just does not work. I am pretty disappointed because with how this song started off I was thinking it was going to be one of the best songs of the album, instead it will drop to a 7/10.
The ninth song of this album is “Basement Freestyle” which starts off horrible. Like in my opinion one of the worst intros to a Travis Scott song, but I think it makes up for the bulk of the song. For a freestyle song this hits. The song goes through different flows seamlessly which is something I enjoy. This song deserves a god rating at 7.5/10.
“Backyard” follows and is a basic Travis Scott song. The beat is vibey, the lyrics are okay and the flow is alright. This song is really just an average song in the album and does not provide anything crazy or amazing to the album. So, this song gets a 6/10 just because it is pretty average and does not have really anything that wows me.
The 11th song of the album is “Grey.” In my opinion this song is the best of the album and is worth every second listening to. The lyrics flow greatly with the beat and the pure creation is a work of art. It also has the classic switch that Travis Scott adds in at least one song in an album, like “Stargazing” in his album “Astroworld.” My rating for this song is a really great 9/10.
The final song of the album is “BACC (Bonus).” As the album “Days Before Rodeo” ends, this song is a good one to end on. The beat is fantastic, vocals could be better, but the vibe is pretty good. The final song gets a rating of 7/10.
In review, the 12 song album, “Days Before Rodeo” by Travis Scott features a wide variety of styles of hip-hop music. Some of the best songs of the album are “Grey,” “Skyfall” featuring Young Thug, and “Mamacita” featuring Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug. These songs are the must listen to’s in the album, however avoid “Zombies” and “Backyard” as I believe these ones are the worst overall songs of the album. Now, my final review of the album as a whole is a solid 7/10. In my rankings of Travis Scott albums that I have listened to, “Days Before Rodeo” falls in fourth place behind “Rodeo,” “Utopia,” and “Astroworld.”
