The Antler of the Week crew chats up Quiz Bowl team member Carson Deprez.

A potential future Jeopardy star and trivia expert, Carson Deprez has advice for those who wonder what the Quiz Bowl experience is all about.

“It’s like trivia on a team,” Deprez said, describing what Quiz Bowl is.

Deprez said there are four or five trivia topics team members can focus on in the group: history, geography, literature, and math/science.

“I’ve always been really good at history and geography,” Deprez said. “I just kind of keep up with it, but I also do really good at literature.”

Deprez said Quiz Bowl competitions can be really stressful and the team’s goal is to, “get the most points for your team.”

Unlike most sports, Quiz Bowl competitions aren’t limited to a certain time of year.

“It’s not a season,” Deprez said. “It goes on all year.”

Carson said the team has an important competition coming up in November, the National Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament.

Deprez said practices are just like a competition, but a bit less organized.

“Before I first started Quiz Bowl, I didn’t even know it existed,” Deprez said. “One of my friends asked me if I wanted to sit with them at lunch, and I decided to be part of the group in the library and everyone was really nice.”

Deprez said he wants to study biochemistry in college and is thankful for his experiences in Quiz Bowl.

“I definitely understand more about the world because of it,” Deprez said.
