In the game of golf, you have to have a good drive. Not just the ability to hit the ball accurately and with distance, but the desire to get better. Junior Ruby Lamski, a golf team captain, demonstrated she has that drive by qualifying for and competing in the state golf tournament in Scottsbluff Oct. 14th and 15th, and is this week’s Antler of the Week.
In order to qualify for state, Lamski had to put in the work.
“[In practice] we usually hit out on the range and putt,” Lamski said. “Sometimes we’ll go out and play the course, but that’s not everyday,”
Putting in the work during an ordinary practice is important, but scouting the state course and practicing on it is one more boost to be successful.
“Me and my mom played on Sunday right when we got there, so we could scope out the course, so I wasn’t going in not knowing what was happening,” Lamski said.
Lamski said the state tournament was a lot of work and pressure.
“The hardest part is when you’re just in a bad spot and you can’t get yourself out of it,” Lamski said. “If you can’t get yourself out of it, then you hit bad shots over and over again, and it’s really frustrating that you can’t get yourself out of it.”
Even through all the stress and pressure Lamski still found some good in the state tournament.
“My favorite part about state was probably going out to eat with Annabelle, with all our families together,” Lamski said.
In addition to her drive on the course, Lamski also showed a desire to lead and was chosen as one of the team captains. As a team captain Lamski said she was able to show her responsibility and leadership for the sport.
“I got to take on a role of leadership and leading the team,” Lamski said.
