Teenage Bounty Hunters

Netflix’s new show Teenage Bounty Hunters leaves viewers wanting more.

October 2, 2020

The new Netflix show Teenage Bounty Hunters was not what I expected. With a whole cast of newcomers including Maddie Phillips, Devon Hales, and Anjelica Bette Fellini, it was refreshing to see Netflix not using the same actors that appear in every Netflix show. I will say I was doubtful about how good the show would be since cheesy advertising and corny jokes made it seem like a really bland comedy until I saw the first episode. I’m not going to go into detail about the opening scene, but it kind of threw me off. Simply put, the series follows a pair of Christian twins who live in a very conservation and religious town, go to private school, and accidentally become teenage bounty hunters. Pretty normal, right?

The plot is definitely unique, but also very confusing, especially at the beginning since nothing was really explained and it never really is, but the show makes it easy to forget the plot holes when it throws so many different plots in front of you. For only having 10 episodes a lot was packed in there, and for being a teen comedy show there was a lot of social commentary. They covered topics from religion and sexuality to the justice system and politics, all while keeping the tone light-hearted and relatable. None of the topics were forced and they came up naturally as the characters endured different problems, along with the teenage characters actually acting like teens. Most of the actors are in their early to mid-twenties which isn’t ideal, but for the most part, the acting wasn’t cringey or overdone and seemed natural. I thought it was especially realistic during their scenes in Spanish class where everyone was butchering all the words since I can relate to that.

Even though certain scenes were a little weird, they make you think as you watch. Since the whole idea of the show is that there’s one big mystery, they did a good job of only giving the viewer enough clues where it made sense but didn’t give the ending away. There were interesting plot lines for each character so it was easy to stay invested and they tied each story up the best they could in one season, even though they obviously set everything up for season 2. Which brings me to the ending. It made me want to scream at the TV in frustration. No spoilers, but let’s just say if there isn’t a season 2  I’m going to be very mad and confused.

I think that Teenage Bounty Hunters is different from anything else on Netflix right now, and I hope the creators keep going without losing what makes the show good. I think that Netflix needs to work on their trailers since it didn’t do the show justice, and not try so hard with the jokes. Altogether I’d give it a solid 9/10.
