Juniors Katie Schultz and Alexa Swerczek have qualified for state golf for the first time in their golf careers. On October 11th and 12th, the girls will be playing 36 holes at Scotts Bluff Country Club.
Throughout the season, the girls have been placing high up during tournaments. After the Westside Golf Invite, Schultz placed ninth and Swerczek placed tenth overall. During an invite with a total of 74 girls competing, Swerczek placed in the top 15.
Swerczek came close to qualifying for state in the previous season but shot higher than expected. This year, she overcame the nerves of repeating last year’s districts.
“I worked all winter long, and all summer I competed at NJGT tournaments…this year, there is a lot more joy, a lot of hugs, and a lot of pictures…I’m [excited] just going, and I get the opportunity to compete at state,” Swerczek said.
As they practice, both girls will be focusing on bettering their drives and putting accuracy for the next week.
“My driver I hit really well, but it can be a hit or miss for me…Putting is going to be a very big thing. [Putting] is 60% of the golf game,” said Swerczek.
When it comes to their mental game, having a healthy mindset keeps them in the game.
“[My biggest asset is] being able to have solid contact with the ball and hitting solid shots and not being afraid that my shot is shooting to the left or shaken to the right every time,” Schultz said.
With state fast approaching, the girls are most looking forward to spending time with each other while playing a game they love.
“I’m just excited to go and just have fun with Alexa and just play golf for a couple of days,” Schultz said.
