Are you ready for some football? Well, if you’re a Chiefs fan you’re out of luck because when I tune in to watch a game it’s as if a Taylor Swift concert was taking place. The announcers reference her songs, the cameras show her reactions to nearly every big play. It’s infuriating. I just want to watch a football game.
There has been a spur of controversy after Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and singer Taylor Swift went public with their relationship. While the media is portraying the newfound relationship between Kelce and Swift in a positive light, many Chiefs fans, including myself, feel the exact opposite. Sunday is the day of the week that millions of football fans look forward to daily. Now that is overshadowed by the excessive cuts and mentions of Taylor Swift. It has even gone to the extent of Swift fans buying tickets to Chiefs games, inherently taking them away from fans of the game. Was the Eras Tour not enough for them? It does not help that Taylor seemingly loves having this new spotlight on her.
As a Chief fan, it feels like the hard work these players put into the game is now being forgotten and underappreciated all because of some silly little romantics. Just wait until the Swift-Kelce breakup album drops and she paints him out to be a villain, like she has with every past boyfriend. Many other Kansas City fans feel the same way. The app X is filled with thousands of angry fans. Many of the posts exemplify an irritated attitude towards the attention being taken from the players. They point out that they are watching the football game to watch football, not to look at Taylor Swift buddying up with Brittany Mahomes.
One student at Elkhorn shares the opinion of many fans on the internet.
“Now this is taken from the true fans of football and people are buying tickets to see Taylor Swift and not football,” said senior Aidan Smith.
As the relationship between these two stars grows, so does the rage of many football fans across the country. When will football become football again and not a Taylor Swift commercial?
