The boys’ basketball team looks to rebound from last year to make a strong push in this year’s Class B basketball season. They are looking to run it back to the state championship.

“It was obviously frustrating. I never want to lose but I was happy how we battled back” Coach Nick Thompson said of last year’s playoff loss to Crete.

The boys basketball team faced adversity at the start of last season, winning only three of its first nine games, but they charged back to finish the season ranked fourth in Class B. One of the more memorable games of the 22-23 season was the sub district game against top-ranked Skutt Catholic.

“Skutt was most definitely the hardest game we have ever played,” senior Cole Petersen said.

Elkhorn won 48-47 in a hard fought game which was played to the final minute. The game was put away by alum Ethan Yungtum. The Elkhorn Holiday tournament is something Thompson is looking forward to this season to rebound from losing this past year.

“We have opportunities to jump start our season before the moratorium break,” Thompson said.

The Antlers had lots of accomplishments as a team last year, only losing 8 games last year and winning the district final game against Gering.

“That was awesome. We had a great showing of guys and lots of students and a huge relief after playing Skutt,” Petersen said.

Many of the Antler basketball players are eager to get back to PBA this upcoming season.

“Going to Pinnacle Bank Arena is a weird experience, especially me being just a freshman,” sophomore Nixon Farmer said.

Going to PBA is something not everyone gets to experience, especially playing there. The team has one goal and dream in common: winning a state championship for Elkhorn High School.

“I hope we can make it to the second round and win it all,” senior Luke Howard said.
