Usually when Orlando, Florida is mentioned, one’s mind goes to Disney World, Universal Studios, and the beach, but for FBLA members the National Leadership Conference also comes to mind.

Each year, the best and brightest from FBLA in each state have the opportunity to compete in the National Leadership Conference, however it’s not as simple as it sounds. FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America, and they spend their time doing different projects and going to conventions.

“What students do is they go to the State Leadership Conference in April in Kearney, NE and then if they qualify in the top three for one of the about 100 different events they can qualify to go to Orlando for nationals,” FBLA advisor Rachel Barry said.

At the National Leadership Conference, participants can compete in one event, against students from all other states and even other countries. Although no one from Elkhorn High School went to nationals last year, Barry has faith in her students this year.

“I have confidence in a lot of my FBLA kids, I think we’ll have a good number to qualify to go this year,” Barry said.

For the time being, FBLA is working on different projects to give back to the community and school.

“We are in charge of the school food drive, pick up trash, put green/earth facts in the announcements, and go to different leadership conferences,” treasurer Sarah Lindberg said.
