The Kansas City Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, won their fourth Super Bowl. Super Bowl 58 is just the second Super Bowl in the history of the NFL to go to overtime, the first to do so was Super Bowl 51 where the New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28.
The San Francisco 49ers came out slinging in the first half with quarterback Brock Purdy amassing 123 yards. It was promising for the 49ers after their trick play to go up 10-0, in which wide-receiver Jauan Jennings passed the ball to Christian McCaffery for a 21-yard score. Shortly after the touchdown the Chiefs went down and scored a field goal by Harrison Butker to get the game within distance to make it 10-3. The 49ers, with only 20 seconds left in the half, would go on to let the clock run out to go into overtime.
The halftime performance, sponsored by Apple Music, featured Usher, Alicia Keys, H.E.R., will.i.am, Ludacris, and Lil John. The halftime show was interesting. It was not great, however, it was not awful either, overall it was simply mediocre.
Following halftime, the third quarter propelled the Chiefs ahead with a field goal by Butker and a 16-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. These two scores put the Chiefs ahead of the 49ers with 13-10.
The entertaining fourth quarter was one to see. Both teams were scoring back and forth with long drives down the field. Beginning with the 49ers, Purdy threw a ten-yard touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings, but the kicker, Jake Moody, missed the extra point attempt because it was blocked, making the score 16-13 49ers. Then the Chiefs went down the field but stalled and kicked a 24-yard field goal to make it 16-16. After that, the 49ers went down within field goal range and Moody kicked a 53-yard field goal to make it 19-16. With one minute and 53 seconds left in the game, the Chiefs scored a field goal by Butker to tie the game with no time left.
The game entered overtime, which is the second time in NFL Superbowl History. The 49ers won the coin toss and chose to receive. They drove down the field to the Chief’s nine-yard line, but they stalled out and had to kick a field goal to make the score 22-19. The Chiefs took the ball with seven minutes and 22 seconds to either kick a field goal or score a touchdown to win the game. The Chiefs took seven minutes and 19 seconds to drive down the field 75 yards. The Chiefs won the game with Mahomes throwing to Mecole Hardman for a three-yard touchdown pass. Overall the Super Bowl was entertaining and thrilling because it got down to the wire.
