Compared to years past many of the spring sports at Elkhorn have seen increasing numbers of people wanting to participate. Tennis especially has seen a surplus in participants this year, baseball had to cut many players, and there are quite a few people doing track as well.

Underclassmen are one of the reasons spring sports have seen a surplus of participants in spring sports. While there are only a few juniors and seniors in tennis there tends to be a lot of sophomores and freshmen playing tennis this year. Underclassmen tend to be more likely to enter new sports because they can start on reserve or JV and work their way up to varsity their junior or senior year while on the other hand the upperclassmen do not necessarily want to be on reserve or the JV team.

Another explanation for the increase in people joining tennis especially is that tennis is a sport many people start while in high school. Not a lot of people start playing tennis young, making it more of an even playing field and welcoming for people wanting to try a new sport. Other sports such as football and basketball require one to already be decently good before even starting in high school. People who are looking for a new activity often look to tennis as everyone is starting fresh.

The track team always has a lot of participants each year. Many people go out for track as they try to keep in shape for the other sports they play as well. People who participate in football, cross country, volleyball, and many more sports often participate in track during their off-season Track has many events leading it to have something for everyone, making it a sport that a lot of people can enjoy.

Baseball also often has numerous people going out for the sport each year and often has to cut a variety of players. Baseball has a reserve, JV, and varsity team and still has to cut players, showing the large number of students that go out for the sport. Many of the players that are cut are not even always new players as well, some have played the sport since they were young and still get cut from the team.

Spring sports tend to be popular as they always have a lot of participants and students like to keep busy while their year is coming to an end. Baseball, track, and tennis have loads of people each year leading to their popularity.
