It doesn’t have a great plot; in fact, the plot was kind of weak, but the in-theater experience and meme culture that has erupted as a result make “A Minecraft Movie” the most entertaining film I have seen since “Avengers: Endgame.”
The movie’s plot was expected. Four quirky people from the real world are trapped in the world of Minecraft. They need to find their way out, but many challenges get the way. Steve, the main Minecraft character, is played by Jack Black and this was a very typical Jack Black-type movie. Like his character in the “Super Mario Bros.” movie, Black plays a goofy character.
Black’s iconic lines really made the movie. From “Chicken Jockey” to his Hot Lava and Chicken song, it was quite humorous. This was picked up on social media, creating hype for his specific lines and gaining a specific audience from middle schoolers to twenty-year-olds.
I went to the movie’s opening night, and nearly everyone in the theater I was in would clap and cheer after every iconic Jack Black line. It was amazing. I would say it was also slightly annoying, but sometimes you have to channel your inner immaturity.
There were some unexpected twists as well, like Jennifer Coolidge’s character hitting a Minecraft villager with her car and then going on a date with him. This was a nice deviation from the expected storyline.
I will say though that this movie sort of lacked the nostalgic feeling of Minecraft. As someone who has been playing Minecraft since 2012, many people can agree that a game, even one that new, has a strong nostalgic feeling. The Minecraft game has a notorious soundtrack, recognizable by many. “A Minecraft Movie” only included one actual Minecraft song, known as Pigstep.
So, where humor and fame were gained, nostalgia was lost. But overall, this movie was excellent. I did not go into the movie expecting some sad, gut-wrenching story. I expected something fun, and that’s what this movie delivered.
