The costumes, the songs, the sets. Everything came together perfectly for Elkhorn High’s 50th musical: Anastasia. I knew the show was going to be good given the history of musicals here at Elkhorn High, but I was still pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed watching EHS’s newest production.
Anastasia is based in Russia and Paris through a few decades surrounding the Bolshevik Revolution. The plot not only tells the story of Anya (Anastasia) trying to find her past and Nana, it also has a couple of side plots featuring love interests.
My favorite part had to be the costumes. From extravagant ball gowns to revolutionary rags, the costume department really nailed the vision for this show. The gown for the queen especially studio out to me with all the appliques and bling on the dress.
The most unexpected thing for me were the two kisses between Anya and Dmitri as well as Vlad and Countess Lily. I also liked how Gleb ultimately chose his love for Anya over his duty for his country.
The one complaint I have would be the balance of sound. It could be because of how I was sitting in the audience, the fact that it was opening night, or both, but there were times in which it was difficult to hear what was being sung or said on stage.
Overall, the production was an outstanding addition to the continued legacy of 50+ EHS musicals.
