Gold medal hockey isn’t reserved for the Olympics. The Elkhorn blue hockey team has a chance to win gold of it’s own after a nail-biting overtime victory over second ranked Creighton Prep. Elkhorn Blue, a team that has fought hard throughout the season, have earned their position as the top ranked team in the league.

The semi-final game, held Feb. 25th, was a display of grit and determination. The Blue team faced a tough opponent in #2 Creighton Prep. The game was a back and forth battle, with both teams trading goals and momentum. The atmosphere in the rink was electric, the crowd roaring with every near miss and big hit.

Blue’s defense stood tall, with goaltender, junior Alex Schapper, putting up a wall in front of the net, deflecting shot after shot. The offense was led by senior forward Brian Strohman, who pressed relentlessly with a mix of strategic shots and offensive moves. The game went into overtime with a lot on the line. Then, in a moment of roaring, forward Brian Strohman found the back of the net, sealing the victory.

“We knew it would be a tough game,” Strohman said. “I just knew if I did my job my team would do theirs and we pulled out a really good win and we’re excited for this Monday.”

The road to the State Championship has been an inspiring journey for Elk Blue, a team that is made up of players from Elkhorn South and Elkhorn High. The team has overcome challenges and lived up to its potential. They will face the winner of Prep vs Omaha Metro Monday, March 2 for the championship. Fans are already eagerly anticipating the championship game, ready to support the team for this historic moment. The entire Elkhorn community is rallying behind Elk Blue.
