On April 30th, the Teacher Training Conference Center transformed into an art gallery for opening night of the Elkhorn Art Show. The show features art from middle and high school artists and is set to run until Sunday, May 3rd. The show provides an opportunity for selected middle and high school students in EPS to showcase some of their latest pieces. EHS Art teacher Jay Thiltgen said his students worked hard to prepare for the show.
“Most of the work in the show was four to five weeks in development from start to finish,” Thiltgen said. “Students completed one to two weeks of drill work to establish concepts and then spent three to four weeks perfecting their final piece.”
The art show is fairly new to Elkhorn and is a good way to showcase students’ talents. The administration has worked for it to expand, making the Teacher Training Conference Center (TTCC) available for free.
“We just started it a couple years ago as a way to showcase all the school’s art pieces,” Thiltgen said. “It has evolved so we could have the middle schools there this year.”
Since the administration has let high school and middle school be involved with the art show, the turn out has been very good even on opening day.
“We had 250 people that actually signed in at the show, but I bet you it {the attendance} was closer to 400,” Thiltgen said.
Art pieces of all types including ceramics, graphite shading, and acrylic paintings are showcased. Students in the Art 1 class have pencil drawings on display.
“I drew point shoes in the middle and a ribbon going across the page with some numbers and a ballet bar,” junior Allyson Brott said of her piece.“I decided to draw this because I can no longer dance due to an injury, so I wanted something to connect me to dance in another way.”
The show runs from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. May 1; 1:00 -4:00 p.m. May 2 and May 3rd.
