The Antler girls soccer team won its first-round game at the state tournament May 12th, beating Kearney Catholic 5-0. The first goal was an own goal forced by senior Olivia Thompson, followed by another shot outside the box by Olivia Thompson. The third goal was by junior Molly Flynn which was a header from a corner kick by Olivia Thompson.

“My header felt really exciting and I think it was a confidence boost for me and for the team and I think it helped us mentally lead to more goals,” Flynn said.

Flynn also had the game’s fourth goal and freshman Elly Thompson finished the scoring with the fifth goal. The team will play in the semi-finals against Lincoln Pius Saturday, May 16th at noon.

Elkhorn’s defense held Kearney Catholic to one shot on goal during the first-round game and junior Lily Larka said defense will also be important to the Antlers’ success against the one-loss Thunderbolts.

“The backline needs to limit set pieces like corner kicks, be smart with the ball and clear the ball smartly so we can maintain posession,” Larka said. “They are strong on corners and are good receiving the ball out of the air,” Flynn added.

Flynn said the offense needed to be active to put pressure on Pius’s defense.

“We need to posess the ball, maintain composure and take lots of shots to test their goalie,” Flynn said.
