EHS Stands With Ukraine
What started as a simple fundraiser ended in over $2,000 raised for Doctors Without Borders
More on Ukraine
Elkhorn High School raised money for Doctors Without Borders. Doctors Without Borders (DWB) is an international medical aid organization that works in helping supply countries affected by conflict.
On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, starting a war between the two countries. Over 150 DWB staff are working in Ukraine as surgeons, psychologists, nurses, etc. to help the people of Ukraine. Ms. Geis, Elkhorn’s librarian, organized a fundraiser for DWB in Ukraine. The donations will go to medical and emergency supplies, along with daily medications for Ukrainian people in need.
“Ms. Larsen’s students and I were reading the book Animal Farm and began to discuss what was going on in Russia,” Geis said. “We decided we could not sit around and do nothing about it.”
Ms. Geis and these students decided to organize the donation for DWB in Ukraine, their library reading project.
From teachers challenging their TA’s to the generous kitchen staff, donations were coming in quickly. At the end of the fundraiser, all the donations were added up to one thousand and one dollars. Ms. Geis was stunned because she was expecting around $700-800 (1 dollar per person at EHS). Although the expectations had already been exceeded, an anonymous donor in the building doubled the donations, making the ending amount $2002.
Geis says, “Anytime we look outside of ourselves outside of EHS, we collectively could have a big impact.”
Your donation will support the student journalists of Elkhorn High School. Your contribution will allow us to purchase equipment and cover our annual website hosting costs.
