“If This Was a Movie”

Taylor Swift’s new movie begins a new cinematic era.

“Taylor Swift: The Ears Tour” premiered on October 11, 2023. The movie has a two hour and forty-eight minute runtime.

As a lifelong fan who wasn’t able to attend a concert on her tour, I am incredibly grateful to be able to experience her show in some way. I had chills throughout the entire film that kept me excited for more.

Taylor Swift made box office history with the second highest-grossing October movie of all. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour ” premiered on October 13, 2023, making $92.8 million in its debut weekend. This sets the movie at number two in box office history of October movie premieres, behind “Joker” in 2019.

The two-hour and forty-eight-minute movie shows almost the entirety of her “Eras Tour” concert, filmed at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium. Six songs were cut from the movie to keep the run-time under the three-hour mark. The songs cut from the actual concert were: “The Archer” from the Lover set, “No Body, No Crime” from Evermore, “Long Live” from Speak Now, “Wildest Dreams” from 1989, and “Cardigan” from Folklore.

The incredible cinematography gave the feeling of being on stage with Swift. It captured the essence of the crowd and the overall vibe in the stadium. Her incredible stage presence was beautifully captured through the various props on stage, like the “Lover” house that was a main component of the stage during that era. Further, different camera angles are used to accentuate the props to make the most out of the show.

It was an amazing experience to be in a theater full of other “Swifties” who were all just as excited to experience the film as I was. My theater was very respectful and stayed seated throughout the entire movie, singing quietly and dancing in their seats. After seeing other theaters on social media, with the audience singing, standing, and dancing around, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the audience. As mentioned, the audience was very considerate of their peers and treated it like a normal movie.

I was slightly disappointed in the songs that she decided to cut, as they are some of my favorite songs from her set. In a perfect world, all of the songs would be included but that would set the movie running far over the three-hour mark.

The movie follows the actual concert exactly, introducing the songs from each “era” with a title cover that fits the album’s aesthetic. Each album, or “era”, has a distinct vibe that differs from the rest of her music. This movie was an incredible journey through the ten different eras of one of the world’s biggest pop stars.

After watching the movie, I am even more disappointed that I wasn’t able to attend one of her concerts. The movie was so amazing that I can’t even imagine what it was like to be at one of her “Eras Tour” concerts.

Overall, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was an incredible way to let everyone experience the tour even if they couldn’t attend an actual show. It captures all of her eras beautifully and really shows off her astonishing talent. My only critique is I wish all of the songs would have been included but that just didn’t make sense logistics-wise. The movie left me an even bigger fan than I was before.
